  1. Sheltering the Deep
    Sabine Jessen
    Rating: ***

This article is about how Canada protects its waters, and how worried Canadians made an effort to try and protect the ecosystems that are in the water. These areas include Race Rocks in British Columbia, Gabriola Passage in British Columbia, Southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Lake Superior in Ontario, Igalirtuuq in Nunavut, Basin Head in P.E.I. and Musquash Estuary in New Brunswick. This article explains the idea of Marine protected areas that are looked after for a long period of time.

I would recommend this article to people who enjoy a long and in depth read about the certain protected areas in Canada. This article felt a little long and I was feeling a little bored after reading so many paragraphs.

  2. Griz Attack
    Ray Walker

    Rating: ***

Grizzly bears are popular in British Columbia, and when female grizzly bears have their cubs, they are extremely defensive and protective of their young. One day, a hiker named Ray Walker was attacked by one.

A hiker named Ray Walker was planning on going for a leisurely camping trip to the Waterton Lakes National Park. Ray had been warned entering into the area about the high concentration of grizzly bears. On day five, of his six day trip, he came across a grizzly with her two cubs. He had damage to his right eye and suffered severe head injuries. He managed to drive himself to the hospital 30 kilometers away. He survived the whole ordeal.

In my opinion, this was a good read because it was interesting to re-live what he had to go through, as a step-by-step telling of all six days. I would recommend this to anyone who do not believe that grizzly bears are dangerous.

  4. Kyle Svachula, 12, catches 53-inch muskie, then celebrates artistically

    *** - Good article

Kyle Svachula age 12, catches a gigantic fish that will keep his standards high and his father proud.

Kyle went to eagle lake to do some father - son fishing. They asked the locals where they thought the best place to fish was. They pointed them to the right direction. After casting for a little over an hour Kyle got a bite. After a hard fought 20 min battle the 53- inch, 40 pound muskie surfaces.
After Kyle landed the fish, it was too heavy to carry so his dad put it on his lap. It was a trip to remember!

This article impressed me a lot. Kyle was able to reel in a fish people dream to catch and he wasn’t even able to lift it. He will forever share that moment with his extremely glad Dad and I am happy that they could experience that moment together. This makes me want to fish in bigger areas then I have previously. When I go fishing if I don't catch anything within the first 30 mins I get discouraged. I have learned that I must keep my hope high!

What I learned from this article is that being in the outdoors requires patience and if you are patient you will get rewarded.

  5. Unexpected Knee Pain on Appalachian Hike

    Rating - ** - Fine

This is a story about a man and a few of his friends who went on a hike in North Carolina to a place called Bartram Loop. The second day into their trip, the man and one of the other guys develop a severe knee pain. They thought nothing much of it and kept hiking. The next day, the pain was even more tremendous and the group decided to seek help. Only two kilometres up a trail and the pain was now affecting both the knees of the two. They took another trail that would lead them towards a road. Manoeuvring around downed trees from a recent hurricane, with many rests they made the two kilometre trek in about four hours. When they got to the road they were picked up by a passer-by in his Jeep who drove them to their cars.

I found that this story was another example of why you must not give up during an injury in the wild. No matter what the injury is, you always have to keep moving because if you stay in one place, you will just get progressively weaker and your chances of survival will diminish. I only gave this article two stars because it did not give enough detail about his story, and did not really tell me any survival skills that could be useful in a similar situation.

  6. Outdoor adventure Canada
    Bring adventure to life

This article I would have to give it a 3.5/5. I chose this article because I love to camp and I did not get to camp this year. I was kind of upset so I decided to read about some good spots to camp.

This article was a bit different then some of the ones I have done. This one shows a good spot to go camp only 64k from Montreal it is called Parc National d’Oka. It seems like an interesting park to go to. A bonus it has 580 sites you could go to (301 are for RV’s). They have even have sites with water, electricity, sewer connection. Lest not forget there toilets, showers and garbage. Those are just some of the great things you can do in the summer. In the winter you could even go snow shoeing a really fun to do with friend, family. You want to have a great experions try going up to Parc National d’Oka.

  7. Contrary to popular belief, panicking, running away and climbing are not solutions to a bear attack. Instead, face the bear, walk backwards and make a large amount of noise. When in a group it is best to group together, protect small children and make plenty of noise. Bear attacks may not occur often however it is important to stay informed and be prepared if you come across this situation. When in the wilderness it is important to always have your food sealed and out of reach for any possible animals in the area.

This article was very informative and helpful for many situations in which you may encounter a bear or bear attack.

  10. The Bear Necessities: Don't Panic, Don't Run, Don't Climb
    Rating: ***

Panicking, running away and climbing are not solutions to a bear attack. Contrary to polar belief, you are instead supposed too, walk backwards, make a large amount of noise and never face away from the bear. When traveling in a group, it is best to all come together and assemble a large group together, protect small children and make plenty of noise to scare the bear off. Bear attacks may not occur often where you are going, however, it is important to stay informed and to always be ready if you come across a situation in which you would need to act fast. To further prevent attacks, it is important to always have your food sealed and out of reach for any possible animals in the area and research what bears are looking for in terms of food. (Bears are seasonal)

This article was very informative and helpful for many situations in which you may encounter a bear or bear attack. It can be referred to if you are ever worried or concerned about a bear attack on your trip.

  11. Global Warming Could Spell The End Of Canada's Outdoor Rink Hockey- By Randy Boswell

    **** Excellent

When i first saw this article I immediately stopped scrolling to open this article. I had a mini freak out because my favourite thing in the world is playing on the outdoor rink with my friends. In the winter i ask my dad the same question everyday, "Can you take me to the ODR please?". If he says says i grab my stuff and run to the car. When we arrive i sprint to the ice and i do not leave until i absolutely have to. Basically my point is that my life in the winter is all about outdoor rink hockey and i could not imagine ever losing them.

The article talks about how outdoor rinks are essential for a fraction of Canadians. The temperature has been rising each year meaning that one year there may be no outdoor rinks. The scientists say that for some, outdoor rinks are the only form of exercise and winter enjoyment. They also talk about about having underground cooling systems making it possible to have outdoor rinks when the earth becomes to warm to have an outdoor rinks survive on nature alone.

I quite honestly feel frightened to hear that the one thing that makes me the happiest in life may not exist in the future. I never thought it not be possible to have an outdoor rink in Canada. This inspires me to use the outdoor rinks for as long as i possibly can.

  12. Climbing Finally Safe For Everyone- By DPM

This article is an eye opener for checking to see if it is safe to climb somewhere.

This guy in the article goes rock climbing. He went to a rock wall to climb. While he was climbing he noticed that there was nothing to clip on to and he fell. He broke his leg due to not having any clips and nothing to catch or support his fall. he ended up breaking his leg and filing a lawsuit against the owner. he raised money to add the missing equipment to the wall so it would be safe for everyone to climb.

After reading this i now feel like checking a climbing wall for the proper equipment before climbing it. I personally think all climbing walls should have the correct equipment to avoid injuries and danger.

  15. Clothing layers for winter sports
    By Alanna Foad

As a child, it was easy to prepare for outdoor activities. Heavy one-piece snowsuits seemed like the only option. When it comes to bundling up for the colder season, there is a more technical approach; layering.

This article educates the population on the importance of layering. When spending time outdoors in the colder season, it is important to be properly clothed. When it comes to being appropriately dressed, there are three main layers: shell (wind breaker), wicking (wick away the sweat) and insolent (traps in warmth). When dressing, it is important that there is no exposed skin. The first layer should be fitted with no zippers or buttons. A turtleneck is a great option; this provides a thick layer to warm the neck. Leggings/ long johns are also great warmth pieces to wear. Under armour is a good option for a wicking layer because it is fitted and is a breathable material. The shell should be light and weather resistant. This is very important to reduce the wind chill and ensure no wetness or moisture. Following this system will ensure warmth and reduce chances of hypothermia.

I thought this was a great article. It provided valuable information about layering and keeping warm during winter activities.

  16. Clothing layers for winter sports

    * * * *

    http://www.catalogs.com/info/outdoor/layers-for-winter-sports.html

When we were younger, it seemed like it was easy to prepare for outdoor activities. Thick one-piece snowsuits seemed like the best option. However, when it comes to dressing warm for the cold winter months, there is a more practical method. Layering is a great example of the proper way to keep warm and hypothermia free.

In this article, the author writes about the importance of layering and proper clothing. When spending time in the outdoors during the winter months, it is important to be properly clothed. There are three layers when it comes to being appropriately dressed: shell (wind breaker/water resistant), wicking (fitted layer to wick away the sweat) and an insolent (traps in warmth and maintains body temperature). When dressing for the outdoors, it is important to cover all skin from head to toe. The first layer should be fitted layer with no zippers or buttons. Under armour shirt and pants are great warmth pieces to wear. Under armour is a great option for a wicking layer because it is fitted and is a breathable material. The second layer should be a fleece layer to keep in the warm air and maintain your body temperature. The shell should be light and weather resistant. This is very important to block the wind and protect you from the rain. Following this layering system will ensure warmth and significantly reduce the risk of hypothermia.

This was a great article because it provides anyone who reads it with the necessary knowledge of layering and the importance of staying warm. It provided useful information about layering and keeping warm during winter activities and being outdoors. It taught me that layering is important because if you get hot or cold, you can add or remove layers when necessary.

  17. Why bother leaving the house?
    By Ben Saunders

    Rating- **** (Excellent)

I was looking for a Ted Talk based on the outdoors when I saw the title “Why bother leaving the house?”. I was immediately interested so opened the link and watched the video. I feel like people stay inside too much and never really go outside exploring or doing any kind of activity. One of his statements really grabbed my attention and stopped me from getting bored of this video. The thing he said was “We don’t live and eat to make money, we eat and make money to enjoy life”.

Ben Saunders talks about his life and how he explores the North Pole area and goes on trips to cross the frozen Arctic Ocean around it. He talks about his feelings and how he was nervous. He would be the first man to complete this route. He describes the thing that mdd him the most happy: the views. The thing is when you’re walking over shifting and forever moving ice the sights and landscapes created will never be quite the same again. He talks about how when you’re actually there you’ll see things like no one else can imagine with only words or a picture. You can never picture the whole thing with a picture, you can try to interpret what the whole thing looks like or what it would look like from every angle with your own eyes. I personally do go exploring in the a forest on my bike during the summer. I see some really interesting sceneries or neat little things along the way; however when i get home and show my mom any pictures that I have taken they never look like what I had seen when I was there. Ben is basically saying that you can’t truly enjoy the whole experience if you never lived it. I know for a fact that if you ever try to explain something amazing to someone who wasn’t there to witness it or live it they just won’t be interested or truly understand what it was actually like. So I strongly agree with Ben that just because you can experience things at home virtually it just will never be the same. If people actually tried leaving the house to see and experience they probably would not pass up on another opportunity like what they have done ever again.

I really feel like I understand Ben. Everything he says that I can relate to is true and he explains it perfectly. I feel like I want to encourage people to go outside and enjoy the experiences that I have done whether it be biking, cross country skiing and wilderness camping. Overall this is the best thing I have watched in a while. I wish more people would watch this video and take his advice.

  18. The Jaw-Dropping Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing
    By Alex Hutchinson

    Rating-*** (good)

This article is interesting because I’ve been cross-country skiing and it is definitely hard and good exercise but to read the results it really surprised me. To know that it is better than cycling or running was a a little bit shocking. Even though you do glide on the skis the uphill skiing and the constant movement of your arms really high tens the effect of the exercise.

The article tells the readers about their test with getting a group of people to cross-country ski. It tells us about the really good results of being 40% fitter. It is a unique type of exercise that provides both upper and lower body exercise that will show far more intense results than most other exercises that are believed to be really good for you. It also describes the benefits of the use of your arms and the steep uphills. It is better to try to power through the hill quickly, in a way it’s the equivalent to a sprint except with an incline making it that much better.

This article was interesting to me especially because of the fact that I went on a cross-country ski trip with my school. You can definitely feel the incredible exercise but you don’t fully understand how good it is for you and this article encourages me to go cross-country skiing more.

  19. Ted talk- Lewis Pugh
    Brice Anderson

This ted talk talks about a man named Lewis Pugh who as a child has always wanted to go to the north pole. Lewis has been fasted of the north pole for a very long and has made it a life goal to go to the north pole. When he was able to actually go to the north pole he wanted a challenge to go with the experience, he planned to swim 1km across the north pole which he has been training for months at a time to prepare for the temperature that he knew he was going to have to face. On the day of the swim he was ready and determined to complete this huge goal. He had done the 1km in just over 18mins and when he got out of the water he could barely stand up on his feet. The temperature that he was dealing with shock his body and needed heat ASAP before his body started shutting down. After the swim Lewis was very happy that he had completed this goal that he had been dreaming of since he was a child.

This ted talk affected me by feel how Lewis was feeling when he had a dream of going to a place and being able actually commit and stay with his dream and work for a way to make it happen. What I’ve learned from this ted talk was to always stay with your dreams and never think that they are impossible to do and make happen which has inspired me to never give up dream and things that I want to do in the future.also makes me want to work hard at me goals and try anything that can get me closer t completing that dream/goal.
